The things people carry on their bikes in Amsterdam never cease to amaze me. In just 15 minutes at this cafe I've seen people carrying: a guitar, children, a rug, grocery bags, a suitcase, two large dogs, a bouquet, four cases of wine. I love how absolutely normal it is too.

@aaronpk The largest item I've managed is a mattress, but to be honest, I did have to get off my bike and walk with it to my apartment.

while this wasn't in #Amsterdam, and I ended up walking with my bike for the most part IIRC, this is how I picked up a free #microwave here in #BodΓΈ, #Norway:

      https://mastodon.social/media/fIxN-dpbarbGS1h8u3k

I attached a vegetable #crate to the back of my #bike and stuck the microwave oven in it. Forgot to bring more rope to properly secure the oven in it though, but it survived the trip, and has served us well for over a year now :)

@aaronpk I'll not infrequently bring a dozen bottles of vino or a carton of beer home in my courier bag on my back in Australia, but people like me are the exception rather than the rule down under. :/

I've spent a little time in Amsterdam and loved this too πŸ™‚ . This is my dream! I'd love to not have a car, or barely have to drive if I did have one.

I once saw someone carrying a bike on their bike. And someone else carrying a crate of at least a dozen live chickens. Amazing.

@aaronpk We spent 2 days in Shanghai a few years back. Bicycles and small motorbikes were similarly used. A huge variety of stuff carried.

Also they decided to ban fossile cars https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/may/03/amsterdam-ban-petrol-diesel-cars-bikes-2030
and to prefer small electric cars (like the E50) - loving the new Trident https://p50cars.com

My wife laughs when I carry a large pizza (horizontally, in a box) home on my bike, expecting me to wipe out every time.
