Passed the Amateur Radio "General" exam tonight! Tried for the Extra license despite not studying for it, and only got half the questions right. Going to go back next month and take the Extra exam after properly studying for it! New Year's Day is the next exam! Anyone else want to join the party?

      that's a fair point.
And tip for HRO: hide your wallet.

Yeah, at some point I'll make a trip out to HRO. I just figure might as well pass all the tests while this stuff is still fresh, even if I'm not using the frequencies.

but I lowly (I say that, as a lowly) Tech license works for both of those. You don't need general for any "normal" HT. So you need to start going to HRO, or whatever and drooling over the mobile or desk rigs, and saving. Or buy and "build" a K2 or K3 (K2 you have to build, K3 you "build"). Then you'll actually have something that can transmit in those bands. But then you also need an antenna...
This is why I haven't bothered. Wife won't allow a mast, and I just haven't had that much interest. =/

I've been using the cheap Baofeng handheld to check in to some neighborhood nets. I also just got the Kenwood D74 and have been experimenting with some APRS stuff!

I still suggest buying a rig before testing for extra.
