Lillian Karabaic There are specific venue rules, like backyards and inside a house is fine, but shown for the same people most elsewhere is not, and the venue owner is liable (not legal advice bc DMCA=pricey!)

Hey, we had a beautiful master plan to transit the audio using my FM transmitter, put a bunch of cheapo radios in the lobby, and then do a screening of Rear Window. But apparently our landlords hate awesome ideas.

It's nice, not crazy fancy, which helps keep the cost down a little. Bike garage is super full which is awkward sometimes. It's not as fancy as Burnside 26, which is good and bad. There's no staff at the building, so everything requires emailing people, whereas Burnside 26 had staff downstairs that could sign for packages and you could stop by to put in maintenance requests and stuff.

Oscar Godson So... if you can show your copy to family and friends AND this projection is only visible to certain residents in the building, it seems it might be time for Lillian and Aaron to make those certain residents their friends! Sounds like at least one of them would share their weed too.

He has no reason to object on a copyright basis, as he'd not be party to any suit. Seriously, under the DMCA, he's exempt as a "hosting" provider. His only obligation is to do a takedown if and only if the copyright holder makes a DMCA takedown request. And you can challenge it.

Copyright laws are terrible and are up to a lot of interpretation, but yes, if anyone that is not family or a friend is viewing your copy usually means it's "public" and technically against the law. https://www.wlu.edu/general-counsel/answer-center/copyright-and-intellectual-property/copyright-guidelines-for-showing-movies-and-other-audiovisual-works

Well there goes your sweet plan of giving everyone on your side of the building a radio and blasting a radio signal for the neighbors to join in the fun. *sigh*

You can't really see this part of the building from the street anyway, our building is in the way. You can't tell from this picture but that building is about 20 feet away from our balcony so there's not a huge gap. So, not distracting to drivers, not visible to the "public", only visible to other residents of the building. I guess the question is whether those residents would be considered public. But even then, they wouldn't be able to hear the sound.

Does it make a difference whether or not sounds is available for the public? I can''t imagine a bunch of people watching this sweet free public viewing if they couldn't also get the sound.

Is that true if it is only viewable on the lot? Because the duplex next store is part of the same lot, and the "screen" is only viewable to people in the building we're in (same lot/address). So technically isn't it a "private" viewing?

    • Oscar Godson www.facebook.com/1607717506213914
There is legal (although silly) issues. You're steaming a show publicly. That requires approval through the owner of that show, technically speaking. Public viewings are not private use therefore break copyright laws. Again, silly, but is technically breaking the rules.

There me be city or county regulations. When we were planning our our current building in downtown EUG the original plan was to paint the building white and then "light paint" it with LEDs but the city said no. Also if that is a street below it could be deemed a distraction to drivers.

Good guess! Yeah it's not shining in any windows, didn't require any modifications to any buildings, etc. I'm pretty sure it's not technically violating the lease agreement (much less any laws), but that's also not really something I want to find out for sure. We also were using a small bluetooth speaker for the sound, so it's not like we were blasting the sound to the whole neighborhood.

Is that iZombie? Also... is there any legal problems with it? It's not damaging the building. Is it putting any lights directly in the neighbors' windows? I could see why this might bug a landlord or tenant in principle, but the reality seems to be that it does no harm to property or violate any laws.
