ah yeah that's right. They stopped doing the "selective availability" thing on the civilian one in 2000, but there is still a separate military signal.

Military still has a second encrypted channel. Some atmospheric conditions effect the two frequencies differently allowing the receiver to compensate. Civilian systems only get the one signal but they can get corrections from base stations relayed by satellites a different government agency put up, or from cell phone towers.

I must have missed the memo that the noise has been removed from civvie GPS. Outdated facts I guess - good to know!

Well they did stop intentionally adding noise to the civilian signals a while ago. Now it's a matter of CPU power required to get a good signal, which of course means using battery. The professional GPS receivers can get down to centimeters or even millimeters if they do post-processing of the data, which is useless for consumer devices since normally we want the data in realtime.

But do they know that consumer GPS devices are purposefully made inaccurate so they aren't competitive with military equipment? Like, it's inaccuracy is a built-in feature, as far as I'm aware.

@aaronpk I saw the original paper. Hopefully the new technique can be added to consumer firmware without $$$’s
