Initial impressions of the Sennheiser MKH-416.

This thing is a gain eater, I’ve pushed my XLR device to it’s almost max and there is no background hiss.

    This microphone is crazy. 🤯

If you have a friend who spends a lot of time in the terminal, make sure to brighten their day by adding

    alias cat="echo '=^..^='"

To their .bash_profle. They will love it.

Hey @zoom_us since #zoombombing is such a problem, in the waiting room, why can’t I SEE who’s trying to get in? No camera on, no access to my conference. Seems pretty simple. Most trolls won’t ever show their face.

I mean, they can let me lock that down if i was worried about that. It's really annoying i've got two devices, both of which i control, and data on one it won't let me move to the other... can you manually do it by rooting your phones? That might be faster...
    Aaron Parecki
The cheat is to copy the QR code or the string it gives you when you first set it up and store that separately from the device. Then you can move that code into other apps later. Won't help you in this case, but it will going forward. That's all Authy/1Password/etc are doing.

There isn't a way to move google authenticator 2fa codes to a new phone? I've got a dozen with different services and all my googling says i just have go through each service and reset them all up from scratch. really!?
    Aaron Parecki
That's what makes it more secure tho. If you can move it, then it can be cloned by an attacker. Granted this is likely not a threat profile most people are concerned with.

Definitely hire a bookkeeper and CPA, but the hard truth is that you should do the grown up thing and learn everything you can about your finances. No one will care about your money the way you will and you’ll have less of it if you try to outsource it.
    Aaron Parecki
Very true, but when everything is stressful, it's okay to outsource things. Eventually, sure, take back some of those responsibilities to save money, but sometimes the reduced stress is worth it.

I find it’s more affordable to split it up. For me, Bookkeeper does the month to month, CPA does taxes/biz reports, financial advisor for investing.
    Aaron Parecki
For sure, but when you hate dealing with stuff that much, you can also hire a personal organizer to coordinate those three. I did that for a while!

I’m terrible with money. I hate handling it!😱

Can I hire someone to literally do everything for me?

    Taxes, savings, investments, etc.

I want to hire someone to do absolutely everything. What kind of person would that be?
    Aaron Parecki
Personal organizer or professional organizer. Seriously, this was me a few years ago, and it was great having someone deal with everything.

They will have to contract out some of the work like taxes to a CPA, but they will be your goto point of contact.

Update: This morning it now accepts my password, but when I go to send email, sending doesn't actually work. The draft email never disappears like it's been sent.

Just being curious: why do you want to use/ are using gmail in the first place? I know you for your expertise in indie web and the like.
    Aaron Parecki
Also remember indieweb is not all about self-hosting, it's about online identity ownership. If I own my domain, I can move providers, which is true of websites as well as email.

Fair question. Primarily: email != web, and the effort to self-host email is far greater than that of websites. Part of why I'm so frustrated with this situation is I had a good setup going where I am using my own domain as my email, it just happens to be powered by Gmail.

Hmm. What if you do ssl instead of tls over 465?
    Aaron Parecki
Same authentication failed message. I've tried every combination of TLS/SSL and port number in that list.

They made some breaking change this morning, and rolled it back, but apparently didn't roll it back far enough.

This is Gmail itself though. Also Mail.app now goes through the Google OAuth flow to set it up so it wouldn't even be testing the same thing. That's why I went and found an SMTP client in PHP and tried sending an email through that and it worked fine.
    Aaron Parecki
so that tells me it's a problem with @Gmail's SMTP client talking to Gmail's SMTP server
