    @aaronpk @mathpunk and I think I've got some code somewhere for the same with halfspheres (great circles) if that's what you're really doing
    Aaron Parecki
    @christianp @mathpunk Yea it's actually on a sphere, so if there's a better spherical solution I'm all ears!

    @aaronpk @mathpunk are you just trying to work out if a line intersects a circle?
    Aaron Parecki
    @christianp @mathpunk. Yes. Whether the line (segment) intersects the circle.

    @christianp See, I keep thinking the circle is unnecessary, and that @aaronpk should just find e from A, B, C. Compare it with r later.
    Aaron Parecki
    @mathpunk Alright here is my updated solution http://www.flickr.com/photos/aaronpk/6204262559/

    Aaron Parecki
    @mathpunk Yep my thoughts exactly. The circle is part of my original problem definition but is not needed to get e.

    @aaronpk If you project AC to AB, you should get D, and so your desired distance is |C-D|.
    Aaron Parecki
    @mathpunk ok here's my actual problem: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aaronpk/6204749156/

    @aaronpk I think that looks good. I'm wondering if you can get hosed if your altitude from C does not intersect AB, for example.
    Aaron Parecki
    @mathpunk Actually I just realized I'm not looking for the distance AD, I actually want CD. More sketches coming...

    @aaronpk I was thinking about your vector problem. Perhaps you could project AC onto AB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_projection to find your altitude's 2nd pt
    Aaron Parecki
    @mathpunk Interesting... what do you think of this solution? http://www.flickr.com/photos/aaronpk/6199216489/

    @amarkor It gets better! No sin/cos/tan needed! d = (b^2 + c^2 - a^2) / 2c Where d is the missing edge segment and a,b,c are known edges (!)
