@aaronpk I got really inspired by your YouTube endeavors and high production quality within a short amount of time. I'm going a bit of a different route but still with video content:

Very excited to see this! I think people overestimate the complexity of hosting video files themselves, but it's really not that bad anymore! You don't need to run massive datacenters to host video unless you're running things at the scale of YouTube. I'm excited to see how you continue to experiment with this! I might even try to bake in some video delivery of my own videos from my website via ActivityPub too!

So I'm just wondering... With static assets like images, adding an edge CDN is relatively simple. But with anything dynamic like API responses, not so much. There must be ways of dealing with that. Because, let's say my servers are in Germany, and you are in Australia. Any API response for you takes up to 800ms longer than for me.

    #devops

    Aaron Parecki
The solution is not trivial. API servers distributed in multiple data centers, and eventually you'll end up needing databases in multiple regions too. That'll lead you down to the multi-primary database problem.

Ironically this is the thing ActivityPub promised to solve by having people use a large number of smaller servers where the replication of data is the ActivityPub protocol.

I've been building a Facebook Events style event organizing system for the Fediverse. It's based on the simple, open source, privacy-respecting event organizing tool https://gath.io

The attached video is a work-in-progress preview and shows compatibility with Mastodon. My hope is to get it working with lots of software, including stuff like Friendica that supports events and calendars.

This is very cool! Nice overloading of polls for RSVP buttons!

I've been working on events too, and just launched https://events.indieweb.org last week! It federates via Webmention, including adding photos, comments and blog posts via Webmention replies. I've been thinking about whether and how to add ActivityPub to it and this is giving me some ideas now!

At IndieWebCamp Amsterdam I finally implemented unlisted posts for my website! This has been on my list for a while, and is a prerequisite for being able to do fancier things like posting full photo albums to my site, so I decided to take the plunge and finally get this done.

Yeah, I decided that I’m not going to work on ActivityPub support for Koype. I have my reasoning around it but it’s largely to avoid duplication of semantic work (Koype is tailored on the IndieWeb). I’ll have a method for supporting it but that’s to come in a later not.

This is going to seem like a joke but it's not: in ~1978, there was a minor crisis around connecting the various networks (ARPA, CYCLADES, etc) into an "inter-network environment", aka the internet. Some of the discussions seems similar to our discussion of interoperability between content types in ActivityPub networks. I think it would behoove fediverse nerds to read up on this stuff.

ActivityPub: Hi I'm literally being born because the former primary author of OStatus regretted not having private messages, let's make private messages the default addressing mechanism and public messages a special exception

*Years later, AP is a standard and widely adopted*

Popular meme: "Yeah well ActivityPub is nice and everything but it's too bad its only for public messages"
