A pedestrian who has started crossing a roadway on a signal showing “Walk” or any other approved symbol to proceed shall proceed with dispatch to a sidewalk or safety island while a signal is showing “Wait” or “Don’t Walk”

Nobody is victim blaming. What is being said is that had these cyclists been more cautious and obeyed their own traffic control devices that he wouldn't have been hit. I am more than willing to give these cyclists a safety course.
    Aaron Parecki
In your still frame, you've circled the crosswalk as it's counting down, it's well over 9 seconds at that point. I'm sure you're aware that crosswalk signals start counting down while it's still safe for pedestrians to be crossing.

@aaronpk I read through https://aaronparecki.com/tag/activitypub some, but would be curious to read more about your setup sometime. Your site has often been an inspiration for me to experiment with various ideas. I’ve also been wondering what a list/circle based federation client would look like 🤔

    Aaron Parecki
Thanks! I realized I haven't actually written about this whole setup recently, but I do have a few older posts that describe how everything is connected. I'm probably due for a new blog post to talk more about this!

@aaronpk what is the value in this over my own Pleroma or Masto instance? Or my webfinger implementation

    Aaron Parecki
That's a good question. I'd say, running your own Mastodon instance is a real commitment to upkeep and software updates. Also you probably don't want your actual home page to be the mastodon landing page, so you'd run it on an alternate domain or a subdomain, neither of which are ideal IMO.

As for the WebFinger route, that's only a halfway solution because the posts themselves live on your shared mastodon domain not your own. It's not terrible tho.

@aaronpk heh that's why I moved to a smaller server

    Aaron Parecki
my server is as small as they get! It's literally just me!

Thanks! Hoping in the invisible hand of the market to come up with something turnkey 😅
    Aaron Parecki
The closest to that right now is probably https://micro.blog

It hosts your website, supports ActivityPub natively, and can also cross-post to Twitter

@aaronpk I’m starting to fear this will be true for us all.

But everyone here is nice, right?

    Aaron Parecki
it entirely depends on your definition of "here"

@ActiveNick @thomasfuchs you can also setup webfinger on your own domain to make yourself easier to find

    Aaron Parecki
if you want to go all in and use your own website as your fediverse identity, you can use this: https://fed.brid.gy/

@aaronpk are you filtering? I’ve had to actively filter on here to keep bad stuff away. Filtering for “RT “ and “@twitter.com” helped enormously.

    Aaron Parecki
That's not a bad idea. I'm not filtering that kind of stuff out yet.

Do you post the same content on both Twitter and Mastodon? If so, do you have a client to recommend?
I just feel I won’t post on Mastodon unless it’s the path of least resistance
    Aaron Parecki
You are not going to like my answer, but it is the path of least resistance for me.

I post *everything* first to my website, and my website handles syndicating it to Twitter and via ActivityPub.

@aaronpk https://social.coop/@brainwane/109379248562850620 do you filter out their boosts?

    Aaron Parecki
I don't right now, but I like that idea. Wouldn't be hard for me to do the way I have it set up. But I'm not sure that would actually help much in the end.

@aaronpk What kind of reader are you using? I'd love to read a post about your fediverse setup!

    Aaron Parecki
I haven't written about it specifically, but it's all integrated into my personal website and also my IndieWeb reader setup. I did write about that here:

@aaronpk I feel ya. Today I curated a few lists to make it more likely I can keep up with individual humans I already know, to make it feel more okay to not be a completist about my home feed.

    Aaron Parecki
oh yeah I don't even have a home feed because I use my own software, I've always followed people by putting them into different groups.

good news: my Mastodon/fediverse timeline has already ramped up to the level of activity of my Twitter timeline

bad news: catching up on my Mastodon/fediverse timeline is now as noticeably bad for my mental health as Twitter was
    Aaron Parecki
and no I'm not actually using Mastodon, and yes everyone I've followed I've grouped into different lists, I don't have a "main timeline" to read. That's helped a lot, I can choose to dip into different communities when I want to.

@aaronpk be sure to get a smart panel like Span.

    Did you update the labels?

    Aaron Parecki
hmm span looks interesting but I'm skeptical because it relies on their cloud service. Do you know if it has local API access too?

Do NOT “just have a quick look” at your #homeassistant app while on holiday and accidentally turn on all the lights at 2am, terrifying your apartment-sitter and leading her to believe in poltergeists.

    Aaron Parecki
Oops yeah those buttons are a little bit too easy to click
