I just paid double what I wanted to compared to normal brands (samsung, kitchenaid, etc) for an induction range _without_ wifi and all that crap. I'm very happy about the choice.
    Aaron Parecki
Oh no I'm about to buy an induction cooktop and the one I was most interested in from a feature/price perspective also has wifi even tho I would rather it didn't, will I regret this?

If you hire someone to edit you gotta train them and figure out all the stuff like interviews, onboarding, systems, etc. A manager shows up and follows you around, figures out your stuff, creates systems, then does the hiring, onboarding, and getting everyone working together.

Who are these people! Do they exist?

The CDC website says I need a negative COVID-19 test dated 24h (!!!) before returning: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/international-travel-during-covid19.html#anchor_1634924936642
    Aaron Parecki
n.b. it needs to be dated the previous day, not necessarily 24h. So you can do the test in the morning and get the results in the evening for the flight the next evening. But afaik that requirement is gone as of today anyway.

@aaronpk crikey... I would not cope lugging around a keychain with that amount of heft.

    Aaron Parecki
It's gotten a bit much but I actually haven't carried my keys in my pocket for a long time, mostly it lives in my bike bag or hanging up at home, so it's fine really.

I got both of them. I was checking out the Sumo paint download and windows identified it as having 2 trojan horses so I didn't install it. I talked to the real people at Sumo and they asked to see a screenshot of the Trojans. No news yet.
    Aaron Parecki
Sadly there's not much the real companies can do about it since the malware is hosted on lookalike but otherwise very real websites. I reported them to the @Sendgrid abuse team since that's who they're using as their email provider.

Is it easier to have the eSIM be the travel SIM or the physical one? I always assumed the eSIM should be my local carrier leaving the slot for local travel SIMs, but Aaron sounds like the other way around works better?
    Aaron Parecki
Huh that's an interesting idea. Well if you don't mind the premium of paying for the eSIM while traveling, it's a lot easier using it while out of town. But yeah you can get cheaper plans with local SIMs.

it’s been a few years since i’ve ✈️ internationally and it’s amazing just how much friction has been removed with the 📱. eSIM installed via app store, internet works on arrival. Boarding passes, vaccine, and lounge pass all in wallet. Tap to pay everything
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah honestly the eSIM thing really made a lot of travel just so much easier. Used to be I'd be scrambling to find a SIM store as soon as I landed, hopping between public wifi until I found something.

Developing Mastodon, I strive to use terminology that is familiar to as many people as possible so as to not put up unnecessary barriers in understanding. For this reason I am happy that we went away from calling posts "toots". It has always been a point of friction for people. Not that I dislike branding, quite the opposite, but in my experience receiving feedback over half a decade, it had a negative effect on the platform for little benefit.

    Aaron Parecki
so was "tootsuite" a play on "hootsuite" or the french "tout suite"

Do I know anyone who knows the right malware analysis tools to determine whether an app accesses any files on the computer or what remote servers it connects to? I want to know more about what this particularly well targeted malware is trying to do.
    Aaron Parecki
In the mean time, if you get an email about doing sponsored videos for @sumopaint or @RainwayApp the emails are fake and are very likely trying to take over your YouTube channel. I'm going to do a video explaining how this scam works because it's very well done.

Found this old photo… that’s me wearing an iPod nano 6th gen in a custom watch band. Talk about pre-dating the Apple Watch! This is 2011, according to the metadata. Who else rocked one of these? 😂 Also: tell me you’re a photographer without telling me you’re a photographer🙄🙄
    Aaron Parecki
the 2007 iPod Nano was my absolute favorite and I am still very sad that I lost it

I thought about it, but lots of smells. Mac only, so probably super proprietary and won’t work with my Windows or Linux setups. I feel like they’re angling for a monthly subscription.

I have a DSLR setup with HDMI capture so I’m mostly good already.
    Aaron Parecki
Agreed. They have monthly pricing already published too. Seems like they're doing a good job of influencer marketing tho.

And while we’re on this tip, this is an absolute dick move by the BVG. Especially considering this comes just after a warning that my ticket will be “valid immediately”.

I feel for the people who built a pretty decent app being forced to do this user-hostile shit.
    Aaron Parecki
I heard they do that so people can't wait til the fare inspectors are coming around to buy the ticket

If you’re not using it to gain something specific — typically related to protocols or interop with a other orgs — I wouldn’t bother. It’s a tool, not an ideology
    Aaron Parecki
My experience interacting with folks in the space has taught me that it is absolutely an ideology and not a tool

    Aaron Parecki
oh I assumed you already had one! I'm mildly curious to see how this ends up working so I might try it myself! The Lametric is fun, but doesn't necessarily work like you'd expect, so I'm not totally sure about this one.

But will I have to hire you to write code for it? 😂 Mainly (at least at the moment) just what I said in the first tweet; toggling between time of day and the YT count, and occasionally making it a countdown timer
    Aaron Parecki
you know what, I think that might actually be possible: https://lametric-documentation.readthedocs.io/en/latest/reference-docs/device-apps.html#id15

I think it might even be possible to do this entirely within Companion without writing any actual code for it...

Anyone got one of these LaMetric boxes? If so, can it be controlled from anything other than the app; ideal with Stream Deck or Companion controls, or even iOS Shortcuts? https://amzn.to/3GohzUi
    Aaron Parecki
I have one! There is sort of an API for it depending on what you're trying to do with it.
