The copyright system is so broken, it's laughable. I remember Youtube content creator Paul Davids getting a copyright strike for his own song, because someone just ripped it of his Youtube vid and "published" it on Spotify. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvH77m_3MVU

    Aaron Parecki
    Yup that sounds about right

PSA to fellow creators who use @artlist_io you might want to avoid using "Anthem of a Quirky Hipster" for a while... Seems like a comedian published the song in a comedy album and now YouTube is flagging any use of it thinking he owns the copyright to it.

I have every confidence @artlist_io will be able to sort this out, it's just so frustrating that the system works this way. I've been using this song for over a year, and now suddenly YouTube thinks this guy's comedy album published last week is the source of this song?

I am just happy to exist almost entirely outside of the superbubble. Also interesting that NBC chose to prioritize that over olympic figure skating tonight.

If you're a YouTuber and you didn't know, don't post a video today (unless it's about the SuperBowl). You're welcome.

Eh I did my livestream at the normal time and had more than average viewers. Also I ignored the internet the rest of the day. I'll catch the summary of the good ads tomorrow.

    Habanero Hot Sauce

    Aaron Parecki
Made 90 ounces of habanero sauce! Not canned, just refrigerated. Should last us through about May if past consumption rates are any indication. Recipe: https://aaronparecki.com/2018/12/25/8/habanero-sauce

@aaronpk didn’t work for me, none of my stats came across.

    Aaron Parecki
If you go clear your localstorage on nytimes then you can use this tool I just made to recreate it!

@manton Josh Wardle mentioned this, and other under-the-hood stuff that I found interesting, on the Syntax podcast this week. (Domain transfer stuff in particular, sounded tricky.)

    Aaron Parecki
oh nice, i'll have to give that a listen!

say... that gives me an idea...

(Warning: don't click this if you haven't already migrated your actual wordle stats)

Open this link and then look at your wordle stats page πŸ“ˆ

    https://aaronpk.com/7i1BP
    Aaron Parecki
Alright now you can make up your own wordle stats for the nytimes version! Fill out the numbers with whatever you want, then click the link it generates!

    https://pin13.net/wordle-stats/

(If you want to overwrite your current nytimes stats you'll need to delete your localstorage first)

Also, if you try to force the transfer to repeat, by navigating again to the old URL, it will still not transfer data, and wipe your new stats in the process. They don’t seem to have put much thoughts on edge cases πŸ˜›
    Aaron Parecki
That's weird, that's not what happens for me, if the nytimes version has any of its own stats it doesn't overwrite it from the redirect.

@aaronpk That's cool. I play Wordle on both my phone and laptop, so already my saved data was fragmented and didn't sync up, but nice that NYT thought of this and kept it simple.

    Aaron Parecki
With a bit of URL trickery you could combine your stats now thanks to the migration tool! Just make a link that looks like the real one and nytimes will happily use it!

Pretty neat trick Wordle used to migrate everyone's saved game state:

The main Wordle site was replaced with a bit of JS that grabs the game data from LocalStorage and puts it in the query string when redirecting to nytimes.

Also notable: that code is vanilla JS, no libraries!

Makes sense. I bet for most folks the question isn't "is the point and shoot good" but "is it good enough to carry another piece of gear."

Turns out us photo/video nerds are apparently used to carrying a lot of gear. LOL.
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah for sure, and frankly I take far more photos with my iPhone because it's always just right there. But if I'm putting any thought into it I will always take a real camera instead.

I still primarily use the one I have in a tab. The one I added to the home screen was done when I was testing it to see if it was a PWA.

I know that when I eventually get redirected to the NYT site that I will look my streak data so I may switch to the home screen then.
    Aaron Parecki
They migrate your saved game state on the redirect! See my last tweet!

When was the last time you used a point-and-shoot camera (no interchangeable lenses, not a smartphone)?
    Aaron Parecki
I actually really like my Sony ZV-1. I know everyone is always talking about how great iPhone cameras are, but even the ZV-1 gets so much better photos and videos. (With the exception of night mode, that thing is magic on the iPhone.)

anyone catch how Wordle transmitted streaks/solve data to the NYT? it’s all local storage so it must be picking it up on load of the original site and moving it right? I got forwarded on my phone so I can’t tell what was sent in the network request
    Aaron Parecki
I see a bunch of game state in the URL when I was redirected. Pretty clever!

Same thing if you’re on a podcast or guesting for someone and asked what you want to promote. Don’t give some generic pitch for your channel on the whole, pitch a specific piece of content you think is relevant to the current audience/scenario and are proud of. More movement.

how does this even work? they block normal ads but then inject their own, so then they get the revenue instead of the website? this is like affiliate injection with extra steps
    Aaron Parecki
