They typically either use a satellite or a local media server. The local server can be down a lot but I suspect there are a lot of parties to share blame across there, not just the media system vendor.

Plex might not want the bad press ;-)

Sure but like the iOS app shouldn't crash when it tries to start playing a movie

@aaronpk I am developing a ground truth app to evaluate smart crosswalk technologies. I saw your ios gps app on github. Does it get access to raw GNSS data? I found DNSSLogger for the android that does this and am looking for iOS code that does this.
    Aaron Parecki
as far as I know you can't get access to that on iOS, it's just an abstraction and gives you just the GPS coordinates. I haven't looked at the actual APIs in quite a few years but that's at least how it worked last time I checked.

If we ship support for tracking pageviews & events via server-side API, will any of you use it?
    Aaron Parecki
I absolutely would use it for tracking events! I had to write some front end code specifically to do that now but I'm missing out on some data because I can't do it server side

@aaronpk may I ask you a few questions about this product? Background - I've used OBS for long timeframe livestreaming with some issues in the past, but I've noticed that after a few hours of livestreaming, it starts to glitch out because of memory issues. It's worse with ffmpeg - livestreaming bitrate drops drastically as time goes on. I assume since this product is hardware based, it wouldn't have those issues?

Also, what does this mean? "Plus the built in USB connections work like a webcam, so you can connect a computer and use any streaming software, or even Skype or Zoom." Does it mean that you can stream to Skype or Zoom, or from?

I understand that this and OBS are not directly comparable. Just wanted to know your thoughts on these questions.

    Aaron Parecki
Yep any time they say "work like a webcam" it means you can bring the video feed from these into Zoom or OBS like you'd plug in an actual USB webcam.

The ATEM Mini Pro and Extreme can do the encoding and streaming directly to YouTube and other platforms, which would avoid doing that encoding in your computer with OBS which is causing the issues you're seeing. Generally I prefer offloading that to external devices for that reason. But yes like you noticed, they can stream to only one place, so you have to use things like Restream or a raspberry pi if you want to push to multiple platforms.

Is this for "short" podcasts. LOL Actually it would be a killer tool.
    Aaron Parecki
I did a video about it actually! There would be so many excellent uses of it! https://youtu.be/i5jUgMDRe-0

I meant a notification to a smart speaker or display (which I hope is true as that would be super useful when at home)

My guess is to send notifications to a Cast-enabled device (since Apple is shady and doesn't require consent for AirPlay)
    Aaron Parecki
I know drivers sometimes have the little appliances in their cars to light up with the passengers names, but what could this do as a passenger? When I'm in a Lyft I'm not even on wifi

I think the intent is to alert you when an _app_ accessed the clipboard, not necessarily in response to a user action- and the paste source helps to understand the potential impact (paste from 1Password probably worse than from say PokΓ©mon go). But also useful to spot mistakes!
    Aaron Parecki
It would be useful if they showed that notification *only* when the paste was not in response to a user action. I would appreciate knowing when an app accessed the clipboard. it's redundant when I click the paste button and then see this because I already know that I am pasting.

@aaronpk Not sure if this applies to your problem, but maybe the nginx auth_request module helpes.

    Aaron Parecki
That's definitely an option! I've used that successfully a few times before. I am also hoping to find something that doesn't require running a VM though, like Netlify or some other static site hosting service.

you could redirect through a serverless function to validate. JWT is probably easier since you'll presumably already have that through whatever service you're using for user management
    Aaron Parecki
Sounds promising, but I still can't quite see all the pieces. Maybe we should do another livestream and tackle this live!

Azure static web apps has auth proxy built in and is pretty lightweight, $9 to byo oidc. Or an az function proxy and use easyauth/write a couple of methods to handle the redirect and code redemption. That's free under 1m executions
    Aaron Parecki
Managed to get pretty far with this approach, but got hung up on this issue if you have any thoughts: https://github.com/aaronpowell/swa-custom-auth-okta/issues/1

but if you’re looking for a cookie, you can check for that in the redirect and send to auth if it’s not present

    the cookie redirect could be:

    /* /:splat 200! Cookie=your_cookie
    /* /login

login could call a serverless function to set the cookie
    Aaron Parecki
how can I validate the contents of that cookie? From what I can tell in the docs the redirect method just checks for the presence of the cookie
