Lately I've been finding more and more that I want to limit the visibility of what I post on my website, for a variety of reasons. This should be a great discussion!

@aaronpk have you encountered atem (extreme) problem when you connect computer out to hdmi, and computer screen will appear for 5-6 sec and disappear?
    Aaron Parecki
Strange, I haven’t seen that happen yet. See if it happens in both inputs 1 and 3. Also maybe try forcing the computer to 1920x1080 resolution.

Can you do it for users?
    Aaron Parecki
Not really with the way it's set up right now, it'd take quite a bit of fiddling. I do see an RSS feed for GitHub, it's all the way at the bottom of github.com called "Subscribe to your news feed". But when I try to add that to a reader I get an error "This GitHub URL is not supported" which doesn't really make sense.

Hey @aaronpk, in the article you wrote several years ago where you got Github notifications into Monocle, is that still relevant? I have been trying for a while to grab the RSS from my notification page, and haven't succeeded.
    Aaron Parecki
Now that you mention it, I'm looking and I don't see a way to get the notification feed anymore. The way mine is set up now is by configuring webhooks for specific repos on github that get pushed to my reader.

Fantastic, thanks! What a great tool!

I just noticed there’s a json blob hidden on the monocle preview page - is there a url I can post to that returns just that json?
    Aaron Parecki
Yep! Monocle's preview is a UI wrapper around the parsing service which is at https://xray.p3k.app You can use that hosted version or you can download it locally too https://github.com/aaronpk/XRay

Hey, does anyone in #indieweb know if I can validate whilst developing? The tools at https://indiewebify.me/ and https://monocle.p3k.io/preview (awesome tool @aaronpk!) are fantastic but I always have to push my changes live before I can verify if they're correct. Haven't found any yet
    Aaron Parecki
You could use a tool like ngrok.io to create a public address for your local development server, or you could run those validator tools locally!

@aaronpk I’m confused what’s going on with your site. These are a year old, but don’t look like boosts? Are you doing this manually?

    Aaron Parecki
It was a bug in the workflow I use to post these! It thought it hadn't imported these before so it sent them again. It did use the correct date, which surfaces an interesting "feature" of Mastodon which is that it will show you posts it receives at the top of the feed regardless of the date in the post's metadata.

    How was the wyze watch?
    Aaron Parecki
it's fine, no major complaints, but it doesn't have dramatically better battery life than the fitbit like I was hoping. I also realized I'm losing the granular sleep data by pushing into Apple Health, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do

I think you’re reaching. If you look at the actual marketing material, it’s the same general notion on both sides. Heck, both of these offerings even have a feature called “Relay™️”.
    Aaron Parecki
Basically what I'm saying is Apple is a marketing company and Mozilla is a technology company. It's unfortunate that it takes good marketing for people to notice good technology.

Receipts, for the curious and/or skeptical.
    Aaron Parecki
This is really interesting. Look at the language used to describe both. Apple is describing features of existing products. Mozilla is describing new products giving each a new name. Why would someone care about containers? Tab groups is more use case driven.

Identity coming to Apple Wallet in iOS 15. TSA and US DL scanning. #WWDC21 Q: do we want big tech managing our identity for us?
    Aaron Parecki
If this works like Apple Wallet I'm all in. If there's anyone I trust to get this right it's Apple.

@aaronpk Btw I can confirm that even an old Raspberry Pi 2B can totally do RTMP to HDMI bridging. Uses about 12% CPU with 1080p60 h.264 high profile 4500 kbps, with no more latency than the 4B. I streamed to both in parallel to test, no difference.
    Aaron Parecki
oh that's very good news, thanks!

This is also an XS, but for conferences it doesn’t matter really, because the phone’s cam quality isn’t the bottleneck. Showing off a nice forest/garden background to all the office-sitters totally makes up for it ;)
    Aaron Parecki
    Fair enough!

@aaronpk Saw your “more minimal setup” for video conferences. Here’s my take, without even a laptop. Using the phone’s cam+mike for the actual conference, having the iPad completely free to work during the conference. Custom 3d-printed stand for both together.
    Aaron Parecki
That's awesome! I'm gonna have to try that some time! Might have to wait until I get a new phone tho cause the front camera on the iPhone XS isn't great
