    Stop calling .org non-profit!

    Aaron Parecki
That's funny, I always thought the .org domains were intended for non profits but had no expectation that the registry itself was run as a non profit

Ok awesome, I used to use a micro way back in the day and thought it worked well for what it was.

Might have to buy one of the L’s

    Thanks Dave πŸ‘
    Aaron Parecki
If you get it you should do a comparison video between that and the built in mic. The iPhone mics have gotten surprisingly good, and I think you'll really only do better with a shotgun in noisy environments like expo hall floors.

I think the most frustrating thing with Windows machines is it's not really plug and play. There are some things that need to be changed from the get but once you get over that you have so much great hardware to explore. Gonna make a starter pack blog post about this 🀣
    Aaron Parecki
Please do! I just started using Windows again after about 10 years so I'm a bit out of touch.

So I'm trying something new for a bit. I'm currently using a Google Pixelbook as my main computer. I figure that since I do 99% of my work in the terminal or the browser, it probably doesn't matter what I use. I'll report back on my findings!
    Aaron Parecki
it looks really nice! I'd miss my local dev environment though.

are there any sort of β€œcards only” places out there in the world? Are there many establishments not accepting cards at all?

    Aaron Parecki
Most of the places in Sweden I went to a couple weeks ago didn't take cash at all. I didn't even get cash out of the ATM that trip and it was just fine! Even in the US there are definitely some shops that don't take cash.

Here in Singapore I've seen some cash only places, some cash or the Singapore NETS card, and some gladly take credit cards too. I haven't seen any here yet that don't take cash tho.

@aaronpk πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ not that I'm aware of, I was just following their documentation. https://github.com/tootsuite/documentation/blob/master/Running-Mastodon/Serving_a_different_domain.md

    Aaron Parecki
ah it looks like I only look for the hardcoded webfinger path and not the host-meta after all.

@aaronpk Does your ActivityPub remote follow webfinger {domain}/.well-known/host-meta? I got an error saying "We couldn't find your subscription endpoint."

    Aaron Parecki
I based it off of mastodon but I don't remember exactly. Was there a different way it could work other than that?

Which deployment method did you use?
    Aaron Parecki
I just download the Go binary and run it on an Ubuntu server at home. I have it set to talk to a MySQL DB on the same machine. The upgrades are just replacing the binary and it figures out the migrations itself.

Let's say I wanted to move my code off GitHub but still have a neato web interface: What are some self-hosted git web interfaces to consider? Gitea looks pretty neat: https://gitea.io/en-us/
    Aaron Parecki
I've been using Gitea (previously Gogs) for a few years and have been pretty happy with it.

I’m not even close to running in the red 😬

Might need to do some serious spending here soon.

@acorscadden Nothing automatic like OwnYourGram, but we do have a dedicated batch import feature in the macOS version of Micro.blog. There's a help page with links to more info here.

    Aaron Parecki
OwnYourGram isn't automatic anymore because Instagram started putting profile pages behind a login wall and severely rate limiting requests to profiles. It should still be working if you go into your dashboard and import photos manually though.

Related to previous tweets... at PyConAU 2018 people were talking about their multi-country power adapter and travel cord management systems... who has recs?

    I think I remember @timb07@twitter.com, @andrewgodwin@twitter.com, @chrisjrn@twitter.com, and @freakboy3742@twitter.com having opinions here?

    Aaron Parecki
I'm not a fan of the multi-country ones because they end up being huge bricks. I take a couple of super compact adapters for each country with me now.

Friends who have gone to Japan recently (specifically Tokyo):

What should I know before going?

I have hotel, I'm not really leaving Tokyo proper much, what's the "existing in Japan" things I should know?

    Aaron Parecki
Get a Suica card, you can use it for everything from transit to paying for stuff in restaurants and vending machines. If you have an iPhone you can transfer the suica card into your Apple wallet and use that instead and it's magic.
