The Mezcal Margarita is actually decent (not made from a mix), but wow I forgot how expensive SFO is!

Nah itโ€™s not artificial. They just control everything. So if they donโ€™t like it they wonโ€™t share it.
    Aaron Parecki
well in any case I'm glad you're sharing your results experimenting with TikTok so the rest of us old people don't have to ๐Ÿ˜‚

Posted a video on TikTok. In the video I put text โ€œwatch full video on YouTubeโ€.

The video got ZERO views in an hour.

Reposted it without that text... itโ€™s blowing up.
    Aaron Parecki
Like *literally* zero? I'm beginning to suspect TikTok might be artificially inflating (or apparently now also deflating) view numbers like Facebook used to...

Takes too many steps to fiddle with a phone app! Unlocking the phone, launching the app, etc. Much easier to have a physical button ready to be pressed with a moment's notice.

A thing I started doing: instead of recording my full workshops, I set a voice memo recorder on the podium, and when someone has a question, I press record, repeat the question, and then answer it. Now my recorder is full of Q&A that I can incorporate back into the presentation!
    Aaron Parecki
Previously I had been recording everything, but in reality I'm never going to go back and listen through a two-hour recording. So this way I will actually listen to the recordings because there's only a few minutes worth!

Never enter your password into a search engine.
    Aaron Parecki
โ€ชIt was poorly worded and out of context, but they clarified later you should only search your password if you know it's been leaked already. That said, most of the time the password dumps are going to be hashes of passwords, so this step still isn't a good idea.โ€ฌ

In summary: the standards already exist, I think what is missing is mechanism for most people to utilize those standards and a sustainable business model to support that mechanism.
    Aaron Parecki
Yep! I would love to see more people build out apps that make it easy for people to find and RSVP to events! It's a huge problem space and no single project will cover all use cases anyway. See also: https://indieweb.org/plurality

not yet, but I'm not sure why it would be a problem? WebMentions just sends a URL to where the other is being mentioned, it's up to the reciever to expect a resource with http://schema.org metadata.
    Aaron Parecki
Totally! But check out what we've done with Webmention and Microformats for the last few years: https://2019.indieweb.org/summit#indie-rsvps All these RSVPs are via Webmention Microformats. Click thru the permalinks to see the original posts!

It could be a good time for someone to create an open standard for meetups. Sort of like RSS for blogs and podcasts.
    Aaron Parecki
There's plenty of prior art here, and lots of progress has already been made. what we need is business models that support this kind of thing. Thankfully Meetup is making this really obvious now.

hmm this is new... looks like Instagram must have changed how they're doing media URLs. Right now OYG caches aggressively to avoid hitting IG too much, but i'll have to make a reset button for this.

    Aaron Parecki
With the recent change I deployed to import a single photo by its Instagram URL, that will re-fetch the data from Instagram each time and should clear this up. So you can paste this image's URL in the import field and it should update to have the new photo URL.

fyi, I enabled importing again with some aggressive back-off strategies, so hopefully some photos get through periodically.

    Aaron Parecki
Another update! I reworked the OwnYourGram UI to let you import a single photo from its Instagram URL. This should get around the rate limiting since it's mostly been rate limiting profile fetches which is how OwnYourGram finds your new photos. So if you log in, you should be able to import photos individually right now.

Travelers โ€” is a 13โ€ MacBook Pro usable in economy class? โ€˜Cause the 15โ€ is nearly impossible to use.

It's tight but doable. I definitely prefer using my 12" MacBook on planes.
