    @aaronpk
while this wasn't in #Amsterdam, and I ended up walking with my bike for the most part IIRC, this is how I picked up a free #microwave here in #Bodø, #Norway:

    https://mastodon.social/media/fIxN-dpbarbGS1h8u3k

I attached a vegetable #crate to the back of my #bike and stuck the microwave oven in it. Forgot to bring more rope to properly secure the oven in it though, but it survived the trip, and has served us well for over a year now :)

    Aaron Parecki
Excellent! I've seen so many crates like that attached to bikes here!

@aaronpk The largest item I've managed is a mattress, but to be honest, I did have to get off my bike and walk with it to my apartment.

    Aaron Parecki
haha that's awesome. The biggest I've done is a TV!

wow, a three color eink display? haven't seen that before
    Aaron Parecki
"three color" -- black, red, and white (no color). kind of misleading IMO.

I actually used the "two color" version, black and white.

thanks! what's the epaper display you were using?
    Aaron Parecki
It was the Waveshare "HAT" version for the Pi Zero. The only thing I didn't like about it is that the whole contraption ends up being almost an inch thick. I'm going to try it again using an esp32-e-paper combo device that's as thin as just one board!

@aaronpk hey! the eink/raspizerow thing you showed at XOXO, is it open-sourced somewhere? would love to do something similar
    Aaron Parecki
I haven't published the actual code I used, but it's all based on the examples from Waveshare anyway: https://github.com/waveshare/e-Paper

The real work was in gathering the data in the first place, then it's a matter of drawing rectangles on the screen.

When you finish a PhD in computer science, they take you to a special room and explain that you must never use recursion in real life. Its only purpose is to make programming hard for undergrads.

Hey, do you ever close out of an app, only to scroll through your list of apps and reflexively open the exact same app again?

    Maybe I'm the only one.
    Aaron Parecki
Sometimes I scroll thru all my apps and put my phone away and then open the exact same app on my iPad 🤦‍♂️

Depends largely on where in the airport you're buying your coffee for sure. In most cases coffee you buy at the "kiosks" on the station platforms will in most cases be not as good as the coffee you can find at the coffee places within the station itself. Matter of how space they have within their little booths probably. Welcome back to Europe by the way!

I actually went out of the way to find a shop with a real espresso machine instead of one of the electronic push-button ones!

my trick is to always order an americano, it won’t be “good” but it will be less bad

That's my go-to as well. Took me a little bit to realize it's called a "long black" in Australia tho!

Google Glass brought up issues of consent to be filmed/monitored/etc, inserting always-on Alexa *and* some kind of visual intermediary between your face and world is another magnitude of problematic
    Aaron Parecki
I'm hoping they learned something from Google. These don't have a visual display, and are still only activated with the wake word (assuming you trust that), so maybe I'm hopeful?

    Aaron Parecki
wow, you clearly do a very different kind of travel than me! 😂 I'm usually out and back in 2-10 days tops.

Looks like my traveling starts next week so I’m doing a quick fire sale of video gear I won’t be taking with me.

Sony RX1007 $950 (with Nd kit)
Lumix GX9 $600 (with kit lens)
    AT2020 microphone x2 $50 (loose)
    Lumix 30mm macro $200
Viltrox EF-M2 $150 (MFT to EF)
    Aaron Parecki
wait why are you not taking the RX100vii? I thought that was the best travel camera!

It's the biggest camera I've been taking with me as I've been traveling. What are you bringing instead?
