When you do less videos so you have more time to make each video you get ambitious 😬

I've written a little #LastFM scrobble importer which I'm going to use to import scrobbles into my own website.

Just scratching my own itch right now.

Are there any people that would be interested in such a thing to pull in their listen/song/artist/album info via an api?
    Aaron Parecki
I've been thinking about building this to import scrobbles to my site via Micropub for quite some time. Haven't got around to it yet tho! See https://ownyourgram.com and https://ownyourswarm.p3k.io for examples of similar things I've built.

the problem with filtering mastodon public feeds by tag is peole are terrible at tagging content in any kind of standardized way. I expect that will get better as tags become more important, which will come when databases of mastodon content by tag becomes more popular.

so you're saying that blasting "The Ecstasy of Gold" at full volume at 8am ISN'T a good way to celebrate launch
    Aaron Parecki
This one time, I created a Windows 98 sound theme by chopping up that song into short half second sound bites, so using the computer was like living in a constant state of that song playing.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but that was art.

That’s a hard one; I can think of many places where they don’t check IDs and they definitely ought to. My friend goes to our datacenter to do server work most of the time, and we had to switch centers for the very same reason. I feel you.

Thanks but I'm actually on my last Qantas flight this trip! Flying back on United on Sunday.

I was walking back from a restaurant with my lunch and he walks in front of me to block my path. He says, “Hey you dropped something!” And points at the ground to my right.
    Aaron Parecki
what the heck, I heard someone pull this exact thing yesterday too! I was just walking by and heard this exchange but I even stopped to make sure I hadn't stepped on whatever it was they "dropped"!

I feel dumber and dumber with the college Java exercises. They're distant from reality, when I google them - nothing comes out aside of tutorials how to do that, which makes me assume... these algorithms have no usage in the real world.

Sometimes things like this make me want to drop programming altogether and just... go work in a nearby fast food chain. At least I'd be more useful there... 😭😭😭

    Aaron Parecki
Can confirm, college java exercises are not real world training. However they are meant to illustrate underlying concepts of algorithms, which you will use in the real world by finding a library that already implements it.

@aaronpk Hah, yeah, I remember being embarrassed/annoyed too!

I seem to recall there being a warning on the application form that there was a possibility the application might get held for review, even though fortunately it went through immediately for me and you...

    Aaron Parecki
I'm just glad I am privileged enough to not have to have changed my name in the past, because that definitely throws a wrench into things like this!

@aaronpk Had that problem on my first visit to Australia but it was long enough ago that getting to the web form from inside the airport was a bit of a challenge. I think that was when I was still using a Neo Freerunner; whatever it was, I remember thinking that most people in that situation would have been out of luck at the time. Now browsing the web on your mobile device from anywhere is routine...

    Aaron Parecki
Heh nice. Yeah I was surprised that the application form was actually quite usable on a phone. All I ended up having to do was step away from the counter for a few minutes to fill it out, pay $20, then go back to check in.

I'm still a little embarrassed/annoyed I didn't know about this before I showed up at the airport!

    @aaronpk
It was pure magic. Feel free to click #apconf -
    the thing is :
I cutted the videos but now a keynote has 16GB and 90GB are all videos and they wanna have it on peertube but no peertube accepts this size.
How could I compress it further -
youtube "hd" resolution or fps ???
I mean : Is it realistic that a 16GB video becomes 2GB ok quality ?
Just would like to upload it anywhere …

    Aaron Parecki
If you just use ffmpeg with default options you'll get a much more compressed file, with no real noticeable quality difference. It's normal for the file to shrink that much, just make sure you aren't scaling it down to a lower resolution.

Was struggling to choose between Couch and MongoDB. Instead decided to save stuff in flat files.

@aaronpk is this a sign that database antipattern got me mad and I'm ready to eschew databases as primary storage?

    Aaron Parecki
store in flat files, index them in a database! \o/

Not sure I follow. Do you mean parody/fair use? (Isn't the right to make derivative works one of the exclusive rights of copyright?)
    Aaron Parecki
oops yeah that's what I meant. The point is it's not just a rebroadcast, since his stream has its own personality and original content, nobody is gonna watch his and think it's the real Apple stream. Still not a battle I'd want to fight.

Yep, exactly what I was thinking for next time. Still a bummer though.
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah, especially because by most reasonable arguments yours would be considered a derivative work, and not subject to takedowns, but that sounds like not a fun argument to have with Apple/YouTube

yikes… well I guess I won't be doing this again! What a bummer… was fun while it lasted!
    Aaron Parecki
I'd happily leave your commentary in one tab and the Apple stream in another! I'm sure it'd be close enough in sync to work. As long as you aren't rebroadcasting their audio/video it'd be fine.
