And what is Nav under Desired Activity? (The loss of opening up to users - questions!)
    Aaron Parecki
@nitinthewiz Those settings are all described here: https://github.com/aaronpk/Overland-iOS#settings I should probably move that to the app's website now!

The server is an interesting thing. Considering setting it up on a vultr VPS.
This seems to beat Moves by miles btw!
    Aaron Parecki
@nitinthewiz aw thanks. Don't give it too much credit tho. It doesn't do automatic mode or place detection like Moves.

So long as it's optional, that's a great addition!
    Aaron Parecki
You have to run a server to catch the data rn, so iCloud drive would be easier. Doesn't tick the "data never leaves the device" box though.

@eveforster I've been doing this for years! Just published an app for this, you configure where to send the data https://overland.p3k.io
    Aaron Parecki
I'm thinking about making it store data in iCloud Drive as well so it'd be easier to use. Would that be an ok compromise?

I'm looking for an iPhone app that tracks/stores GPS data 24/7/indefinitely. Ideas?

Why are you even making epub? is that what kindle uses?
    Aaron Parecki
@tylergillies All the eBook readers except kindle use it, and Amazon provides a tool to convert from ePub to their format

Or maybe I'm just mis-stating the argument, which might be really between advocates of structure and those who just want to hack out content
    Aaron Parecki
@isaac32767 There's plenty of structure in these HTML files, that's how the ToC is generated.

In other words, you're using a legacy workflow. Moving on from it may not be practical, but you should at least consider it.
    Aaron Parecki
@isaac32767 What's legacy about that? It's an actively developed tool, and I was following their rec's: http://www.princexml.com

There are a lot of off-the-shelf workflows for converting XML to any user doc format you could name. So if you *start* in XML ... 2/2
    Aaron Parecki
@isaac32767 I'm starting in HTML which is what Prince uses to generate the print PDF. That part works great.

Instead of jumping through hoops to generate the XML, consider authoring in XML in the first place.
    Aaron Parecki
@isaac32767 I'm not going to maintain individual XML files for the ncx/opf files. Those need to be generated automatically from my content.

PHP for conditional rendering of content for the epub vs print editions, e.g. "on page X" vs hyperlink, and to get images to flow properly

HTML, a file for each chapter and section, with Microformats to indicate chapter names for building the ToC...

You're writing XML without a validating editor? I hope your insurance has good mental health coverage.
    Aaron Parecki
by "hand", I mean with some PHP scripts. e.g. the TOC is generated by parsing my source files, etc.

yum install java-1.8.0-openjdk-headless # your OS doesn't offer separate Java from the browser plugin?
    Aaron Parecki
I haven't had a Java browser plugin in ages thankfully. macOS.

Also, the two leading xml editor both run on the JRE. So how did you get that Epub file in the first place?
    Aaron Parecki
@isaac32767 Generator? I'm creating it by hand. It's quite a mess of various XML formats and namespaces with no meaningful significance

@aaronpk is that a chain store that might have a Montreal location? I’d love to grab some more ABA books, but shipping to Canada is super expensive.

    Aaron Parecki
Not sure, it was called "Swipe Books on Advertising and Design" which sounds pretty small!

So our Sonos locked us out this morning until we let it update its firmware. This is a dark UI pattern which strongly suggests they are holding the system hostage until I agree to let them remove features or add anti-features like sharing what we listen to or surveiling our home network. Anybody know of an alternative, free/open source Sonos firmware?

    Aaron Parecki
ugh I hate when apps and devices do this. There should always be a "later" option.
