If you’re interested in the lunacy at Twitter, then @platformer is the only place to go. Today’s newsletter documents how Musk ignores his own staff, shaming and firing them in public, has frozen all deployment and how advertisers won’t reengage until he reverses his changes.

NEW: Days before the launch of paid verification, Twitter’s trust & safety team sent Elon Musk a 7-page list of risks and recommendations on how the feature could be abused. But Musk refused to adopt any change that would delay the launch. We got the docs: https://www.platformer.news/p/elon-only-trusts-elon

I’m at a loss for words at the depth & breadth of the pieces of shit that permeate crypto. So many fucking sociopaths were granted the opportunity to do so much damage. It’s hard for me to imagine the space bouncing back quickly from this ordeal. Too many got burned too hard.

It was a useful way to provide visibility via attribution for third party clients, like Tweetie (which was acquired and became the Twitter iOS app) or Tweetdeck (RIP).

It was also a useful status indicator (e.g. whether the tweet was sent via desktop or mobile).

Just a reminder that "self-hosted" doesn't *necessarily* have to mean literally hosting on a computer in your house. It just means you're in control over it.

People sometimes describe startups as rocket ships and it's a great metaphor. They set fire to tons of fuel, big chunks of the structure that did most of the early work are discarded into the ocean, and only a handful of people right at the top make it to space.

"Mastodon sucks because any one of the 5000+ communities can set their own rules and might accidentally deprive people in that community of my witty hot takes for a reason I personally believe to be flippant" isn't the sick burn that the Twitter user with 50k followers thinks it is.

This is what micromanaging from the top looks like, when the CEO *thinks* they can tell the source of the problem and how to fix it, just by looking at it.

It’s incredibly frustrating when it happens to you. It’s rare to see it this public.

Good luck to engineers in the weeds.
