Donut.js was a huge part of my life for four years, and I am really proud of it. I’m so grateful for everyone who made it so great and for the fun and perspective and donuts we brought to the community. We had 38 events, 125 talks, and donated $15K+ to local orgs. 🍩‿🍩

Your website probably isn't a webapp, and almost definitely doesn't need half the complexity and gumpf you've shoehorned in because you read about a fancy company doing the same on Hacker News

In so far as I can tell, we’ve all come to the conclusion that the “inbox” isn’t working. Not for email, LinkedIn, Twitter, GitHub notifications, Slack / Teams - all are just new metaphorical inboxes. I’m curious if any person (not product!) thinks they have this under control.

    tl;dr:

Win by doing these things with Gen X:

    1) Say "Do it your way"
    2) Use well-written emails
    3) Say "I got it!"
    4) Focus on the mission w/ them
    5) Allow life balance
    6) Bond as people
    7) Be direct
    8) Acknowledge they exist
    9) Expect pessimism
    10) Expect work-life separation

Forums, there's still some but I learned so much from random forums.

How novel and new and exciting it all felt. "OMG I'm talking to someone who lives in Brazil about Douglas Adams, this is so cool!"

One year ago I started an experiment. I moved my live YouTube shows to a whole new channel, on the theory that the live shows on the main channel, which get great views while live but then very poor views after (which is understandable), were hurting the main channel. 1/🧵

I know "Layered Semantic Markup" is like 2 decades out of date as the new hotness now, but IMO it's still the best way to build websites. Build something workable in plain old HTML with form posts and stuff. Add JS to improve functionality. Add CSS to make it stylish and pretty.

the days of usenet, irc, the web...even email (w PGP)...were amazing. centralizing discovery and identity into corporations really damaged the internet.

I realize I'm partially to blame, and regret it.

    Today is Domain-Return-Day.

To prevent the global domain crisis and to alleviate the pressure on your wallet, today is the day to go through all the domain names you acquired over the years for projects you never started and never will.
    Return these domains collecting dust.
