the key thing to understand about NFTs and the entire cryptocurrency space is if you think you haven't understood it correctly because it can't possibly be that stupid, you have in fact understood it correctly

Not enough people note that podcasting is an open, decentralized, surveillance-resistant medium, and that much of the content wars happening around it are about trying to turn it into proprietary, locked-in, creator-hostile conventional tech.

a nice thing about writing with less jargon is that if what I'm saying doesn't make sense, it's easy for readers to call me on it

if you use a lot of impenetrable jargon, people will often think the problem is with *them* instead of with your writing

A man is "shirtless" while a woman is "topless." One might say this refers to women's larger variety of clothing options. More intriguingly, it implies we have not decided on men's orientation in space. Who knows where the top of a man is

fwiw, I understand why people have this sentiment, but never feel like you can’t have a life (even a social media life) because someone has emailed you. Everyone knows these are different parts of our lives.

But there's a hard corollary: systems driven by network effects *lose* value when users leave. Your blender doesn't get better when someone else gets a blender of their own, but it also doesn't get worse when someone else throws theirs away. 3/

Indeed. Web3 is Web2 is Web1. Each of them doomed not because they became centralized, but because they each are rooted in the false premise that disintermediation = democratization, & that enhancing modalities for communication, without regard to rules, is a form of empowerment.

    Here's a really wild chart.

Shares of Hilton have now matched the performance of Zoom since February 19, 2020, the market right before the pandemic.

Just incredible reversal of the "COVID winners" trade. The hotel business is booming. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-02-15/hilton-has-now-nearly-outperformed-zoom-video-since-the-pandemic-hit?sref=vuYGislZ $HLT $ZM

I also look forward to the day when I lose access to my car because someone exploited the smart contract.

At this point, people are just playing say what they see and sticking "but with NFTs" on the end without ever stopping to ask if it actually makes sense.

Just like has happened with email, it's likely to tend towards centralization over time - with the majority of custodial wallets managed by a few giant services

At which point, again, why are we bothering with all of the negative blockchain externalities?
