lmao, @jennaezarik just proved that we're all working too hard on our thumbnails.

Talk about not blending in a sea of everyone else and standing out ๐Ÿ˜‚

Atom content can be a MIME type. Carousels are a presentation option.
    Aaron Parecki
Sure, you *can* represent anything with Atom because at the end of the day itโ€™s just XML and you can extend it however you want, but then you also have to convince other people to consume that XML for it to be useful. This is what I meant by actually go try it.

Donโ€™t forget that RSS is by definition unable to evolve to include other richer post types than just blog posts. Atom you could start to shoehorn other things into by adding namespaces and such. But does anyone really want to keep writing XML?
    Aaron Parecki
Meanwhile, Pingback has nothing to do with Atom/RSS and has always worked with arbitrary web pages. That too was XML for literally no good reason, so thatโ€™s been simplified into the Webmention protocol

Donโ€™t forget posting things other than blog posts and text. You want to post a photo? Sure you could embed that in a blog post I guess. A video? now itโ€™s getting tricky. Maybe use Atom enclosures? Posting multiple photos to be shown as a carousel like instagram?

Okay now we're getting somewhere. Likes I can do without. Some kind of support for discussion feedback is worth having, whether something from IndieWeb, or building off the original ping back servers, or a disqus-like thing. Yes, something beyond RSS/Atom but maybe not instead of

I used RSS/Atom for years without a hitch.
    Aaron Parecki
Sure, RSS/Atom can do a reasonable job of recreating something like the Twitter home timeline. But oh, you wanted to reply to something? Favorite a tweet? Thereโ€™s nothing in RSS for that.

I stated my opinion. I'm not sure why RSS/Atom are insufficient when I see how many more moving parts are involved in IndieWeb. I'm not concerned with how that "looks". That's how I want it to look. If you give me better feedback than simply suggesting i go all in, that's welcome
    Aaron Parecki
I didn't mean to suggest to go all in. I meant literally try using RSS/Atom for that. You'll run up against a bunch of walls real quick.

Update from Sign-in User Research: Today's interviewee is an engineer who writes for a cybersecurity journal. He uses one password to sign into his accounts. Not 1password; one (1) password that's the same more or less everywhere. He knows it's bad, but does it anyways.

And I don't blame him. The thing is - if this guy doesn't use a password manager, the vast majority of people are never going to, either. The odds are as if Trump lost Wyoming or Biden lost California. Password managers are not the solution to online security, and never will be.

I'm having trouble understanding why I would make the investment. I don't need to try it until I believe there's a reasonable chance at a payoff. I have too many other ways to spend my time.
    Aaron Parecki
That's fine too, but making broad statements without anything to back it up isn't really a good look.

I'm not sure why RSS/Atom is insufficient for pretty much all social updates. IndieWeb tech is certainly more convoluted without obvious benefits.
    Aaron Parecki
I'll give you a hint: actually try it
