This is a MONTHLY budget. The rich have absolutely no connection whatsoever to reality.

I've seen worse! At least they put retirement savings way up in that list!

And even if it didn’t… oh nooooo working until you are 60. Many many many people work to 60+ because they can’t retire at all otherwise. The privilege. … the retirement plan of my generation is to die in the Climate Wars, though, so.

Their doubling down of justifications in that thread is the real crime. "I need to have center row opera seats to a performance because those are the best."

By my math, he'll retire with five million and be able to keep up a $14,000 a month lifestyle for 35 years after that.

That’s not how investing works. If you have 1 million invested, you’ll earn about $80,000 a year. Without touching the 1 million.

Correct. So, that’s about 10-20 years of living. If you penny pinch a million can go about 10 years if you already have a house and car but not much farther.

That’s part of the point though. Being able to put 80% of the cost of your rent into retirement savings each month is, by definition, not struggling or anywhere close to that.

True. I’m being optimistic. Maybe they’ll slow spending as they age. Wage increases over time.

But with their spending habits that's not much of a nest egg. You can of course move to a cheaper cost of living area in retirement, and many people do.

$5k a month over 20 years invested in the stock market with an average 8 percent return would be a couple of million.

If you want to spend $1000 on one night out at age 70, you better prioritize retirement savings

Only saving 5k a month means they'll have to work until they're 60
