I’m not sure what kind of HLS support is out there but you can start watching content that hasn’t downloaded fully (streaming?) as of now in most clients.

I wonder what would happen if you served an hls playlist of a livestream though. Would that work? Maybe 🤔

What podcast clients support video these days?

Oh yeah, and Sunlit works with other Micropub servers already.

Is the “authenticate towards a Micropub endpoint” flow OSS and easy to add into a Swift app?

Thinking about it, Sunlit is probably the better of your clients if someone like @bcomnes wants to upload video podcasts: apps.apple.com/se/app/sunlit/… (Assuming @bcomnes has an iPhone 🤭)

That's true, Wavelength uses Micropub but there's no way to configure an external host right now. I assumed we would add a setting for that eventually but haven't had much feedback about it. It's open source, too.

Speaking of that, @mantonsblog has created Wavelength as a client for @microdotblog (but unlike the other clients it doesn’t look it’s supports Micropub 😕) apps.apple.com/se/app/wavelen…

Could probably leverage Micropub to get a client for publishing: indieweb.org/Micropub

Yeah you still need a publishing tool but most podcasts have something like this figured out. It’s not hard to add video support there. I bolted on podcast support with gumcast.com and got video support for free essentially.

The real power is that you get offline support built in, and synced playback state across devices if your catcher supports it. In the apple ecosystem this means phone, desktop, watch, tablet, CarPlay, and apply tv. It’s actually way better than YouTube in a lot of areas.

Apart from it being RSS / Atom and very few people knows how to work with that 😉 (Was at least my conclusion when I worked at Bloglovin some 6-7 years ago, where we were consuming millions or perhaps even billions of feeds)

Luckily the safari of podcast clients (apple podcasts) already supports these features so it shouldn’t be to hard to support other clients to add support.

It can do both. Stream when not downloaded (podcasts must support range requests) or download if set on subscribe with downloads.

Does it download the videos or stream the videos?

      It even supports pdfs surprisingly.

Since most podcatchers focuses on downloading episodes rather than streaming them, I guess not that many? Downloading videos rather than streaming them is a so-so. That said: Would be neat with an IndieWeb YouTube-style aggregator / feed reader :)
