SFO is the airport code, not the city. If you tell me you're visiting SFO, I assume you're just having a layover.

Interestingly we do actually refer to the city of Portland by our airport code PDX but I realize we are an exception here 🤷‍♂️

PDX just sounds cool. I'm glad we've adopted it as a nickname for the city.

at office in South San Francisco we didn’t hesitate to base infrastructure naming on airport codes, though! 😇 anyways I came here to mention Toronto youtube.com/watch?v=LdpMpf…

I lived in Atlanta for many years and plenty of people, including lifelong locals, will call it ATL.

I’ll also refer to Chloe here, but when I lived there, most folks used “SF” to refer to the city but def not SFO

Oh yea I think I've heard that about ATL before, but didn't know about ABQ! I think I've said "SF" a grand total of like 4 times, and I 100% agree that if someone said "SFO" I would in no way assume they mean the city

There definitely are others - I think ABQ and ATL come to mind where I’ve seen locals refer to the area/city by that same code. Chloe’s right about SFO though :)
