Mostly picked a local company that looks promising, then trusted their advice. Once I decided not to do a battery it got very simple; basically which kind of panel and how many of them.

Why'd you end up going with no battery?

  That's OK, @PGE4Me makes up for being unreliable by also having some of the most expensive electricity in the US. When we complain they keep us in line by burning another forest down or blowing up a gas line. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Bruno…

  That makes sense! Up in PDX the longest I've been without power is about 6 hours so far. I can't imagine 3 days!

  Batteries are where I started! I needed something that could last 3 days for PG&E outages. The battery tech is just not there (would have been very expensive). So I got a generator. The solar is grid-tied and is purely to zero out my yearly power usage, not a backup to the grid.
