So far out of all the home automation devices I've connected to this Raspberry Pi, the most reliable ones have been 433mhz transmitters and ESP32s on wifi. I've been getting spotty performance of Bluetooth and Z-wave devices. Could be that the Pi isn't powerful enough, or could be because simpler is just better.
    Aaron Parecki
The Bluetooth stack on this pi is really acting up today! I'm going to try out a new USB bluetooth dongle and see if that helps. If not, I might have to move to some better hardware like an Intel NUC.

oops didn't realize putting the air conditioner and TV in the "living room" group would mean saying "Alexa, turn on the living room" turns both on!

@Gargron I am at an http://indieweb.org meeting today wearing my Mastodon shirt. πŸ˜€
Lot's of sympathy here for Mastodon, but yes, the focus is on self-hosting. Lot's of overlap in solutions for sharing favorites, replies, boosts, etc.

@Gargron nah it's more than that. it can be self-hostable, it can be a service (https://withknown.com/), etc.

and lol no one uses pingback (willingly) in the space, webmentions replaced that

    "Mastodon, another popular IndieWeb service"

Are we really IndieWeb? I always thought IndieWeb were the people who self-host blogs with like, microformats and pingbacks

Does anyone know a secret way to get a refund on a price drop (price match) on amazon? An old Slate article explained how via phone, but I just got off the phone hearing a big NO. Was told to return and repurchase the same items! 🀯 Price dropped $30ea on 4 hard drives… $120!
    Aaron Parecki
They used to do it pretty often for me over the phone, but lately I've been getting a strong "no". Return and re-purchase is the only option, which seems a bit drastic and like it costs them more. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

@aaronpk what board/dongle are you using for ZWave?

    Aaron Parecki
The GoControl HUSBZB-1. I think I saw it mentioned on the Home Assistant forums.

now attempting to disable the on-board bluetooth of the raspberry pi and replace it with a USB dongle to see if that improves things

@aaronpk I just got my pi 4 and have been experimenting too. I have node-red, home assistant, Rocket.chat all running on it. Probably too much, but having fun

    Aaron Parecki
Nice! What are you doing with node-red? I haven't found a need for that yet, or at least I don't yet know what it can do that Home Assistant can't.

@aaronpk I found this gentleman on YouTube and this video (skip to :58) helped me understand what was possible. I am not a Dev (only a cobbler growth marketer) and I also build chatbots for business, so the "flows" make sense.

Prepping for a new house so nothing "production" yet.

    Aaron Parecki
Awesome, I'm gonna watch that. I've also been struggling to debug automations written entirely in YAML, and I really want to get into some fancier automations based on states of various components.

I'm also prepping for a new house, but it's a long term plan, so I'm putting this "into production" in my apartment right now!

Adding a couple new sensors tonight. Attempting a sound level sensor (should report roughly how noisy it is inside), and a color temperature sensor, which I'm hoping can tell me how cloudy it is outside and how much sun is coming in the window.

Thanks for the recommendation! That video did an excellent job of giving me an intro! This looks like exactly the kinds of chained rules I want to make, and was really struggling with doing it via just YAML in Home Assistant.

    Update:

Not getting anything off the sound sensor yet. Will have to debug with a multimeter next.

Light sensor is up and running with the default config, and will take a look at the results after 24 hours. There's a setting to control how long the "shutter" stays open, so we'll see if the default 2.4ms is good for detecting daylight.
