If OpenID started today it would likely see 1,000x adoption in the next 6 months.

There is a need for a new privacy-first single sign-in solution from a trusted source.

Not just from *a* trusted source, since that's what got us into this mess in the first place. IndieAuth is all about letting each person choose an auth provider they trust, even if that is themselves. It's the original goals of OpenID built on OAuth.
